Amid Substantial Growth, City of Baytown, TX, Teams Up with SiteSeer Technologies to Boost Retail Recruitment Effort

The city of Baytown, Texas, has engaged SiteSeer Technologies to use the SiteSeer platform to bolster its retail recruitment strategy. Building upon eight years of economic growth and a housing boom in the town east of Houston, the Baytown-West Chambers County Economic Development Foundation will use SiteSeer and the Communities City Government Expansion Pack to identify opportunities for retail and restaurant expansion.

With the evolution of Baytown as a destination rather than a tertiary market, the city sought a tool it could use in house to perform void and leakage analysis and run other data analytics. Their primary goal, says B.J. Simon, associate executive director of Baytown-West Chambers County Economic Development Foundation, is to offer insightful, data-driven information to the retailers they attempt to recruit to the trade area.

“We have evaluated many different location analytics toolsets and like the value that SiteSeer’s Community pack and Vista data will provide us as we offer new entrants information about this market,” says Simon. “With the growth of Baytown, West Chambers County, and the Houston metropolitan area thanks to a renaissance of the petrochemical industry, there are great opportunities for retailers and restaurants in this market. With SiteSeer, we will enhance our ability to provide substantive, evergreen data to show those companies why they would succeed here.”

Since 2010, Baytown has grown significantly, both in population and median income. The city’s population increased 16 percent from 2010 to 2016 and is projected to grow another 12 percent by 2021. The market response reflects this growth, supporting a retail trade area consisting of four primary corridors anchored by 2.6 million square feet, over half of which has been added since 2013. The city is currently redeveloping its San Jacinto Mall and several housing developments are underway. Baytown is also pursuing the development of a hotel/conference center on Bayland Island and redeveloping its central business district, anchored by a new Town Square project and the Brunson Theater.

Sam Lowder, vice president of business development for SiteSeer, says that Baytown will use SiteSeer’s tools for community analysis, surplus and leakage analysis, and creating retail recruiting packets. “We’re excited to assist this great community as they strive to fill their gaps with best-fit retailers that will better serve the people who live and work in the area,” he says.
